Homebuyer Education Class : Full Day Session

Full-day class covers the important topics you need to know before purchasing. Learn how to avoid common costly mistakes and demystify the closing process during the six-hour course. Presentations from housing experts (lenders, inspectors, etc.) who share their experience in their role in the home purchase process. Learn about budgets, grant eligibility, and much more.

Topics will include:

  • Renting vs. owning

  • Understanding credit and budgeting

  • The Homebuying process and who's involved

  • Affordability

  • First time buyer grant eligibility

  • Learn how to avoid common costly mistakes

  • Explanation of the closing process.

  • Earn your Certificate of Completion (required for many down payment assistance programs and by some lenders) by completing all the required steps in our Homebuyer Program, including this class.

This free class will give homebuyers and homeowners information and advice needed to maintain the home, plan for the inevitable home repairs, disaster preparedness, and how to make smart investments for long-term success -including where to turn for help if you need it.

Class meets post-purchase requirements for City of Rochester and many other grants.

Homebuyer Education Class - Session 1

This free class is the first step in our homebuyer education program. Our HUD-certified homeownership counselors will explain the first time homebuyer program, pros and cons of renting and buying, how to financially prepare for the home buying process, grants and other incentives for first time buyers as well as provide non biased information on how the current market is impacting first time buyers. This is session 1 of 2 to gain Homebuyer Education certification required by many grants including Monroe County Down payment Assistance, City of Rochester Homebuyer Grants, Homebuyer Dream, ESL’s Homebuyer Saver’s program and many others.

Topics will also include:

  • The pros and cons of homeownership

  • Preparing your finances for the purchase process

  • The basics of credit building and budgeting

  • Grant eligibility and requirements

This class will help prepare you for the final stages of your journey to homeownership. Our HUD-certified homeownership counselors will discuss in depth the important topics you need to know before purchasing. You will learn how to avoid common costly mistakes and demystify the closing process. We will bring in guest speakers to share their experience in their role in the home purchase process, share how to budget, grant eligibility, and much more.

Topics will also include:

  • Obtaining a mortgage

  • Grant opportunities

  • Housing and market search

  • Insurance and inspections

  • Explanation of the closing process.

You will be provided the registration links once you’ve completed Steps 1, 2 and 3 of the program, including attending Homebuyer Education Session 1. Earn your Certificate of Completion (required for many down payment assistance programs and by some lenders) by completing all the required steps in our Homebuyer Program, including this class. Meets the requirements for Monroe County First Time Homebuyer Grant Program.
